I sent some example images and this is what she chose.

Well I’ve had a break from blogging for a few weeks with the birth on my beautiful Grandson Archie Lawrence Allen. He’s gorgeous.

Well back to business and I have a tasty treat for you this time with some sound advice on choosing your wedding cake from no other than The Yorkshire Cake fairy AKA Sue Tennant.

www.yorkshirecakefairy.co.uk

I’ve known Sue for quite a while now and have to say I can personally vouch for her cakes they look fantastic but just as important they taste delicious. She also made the cake pops for Archie’s mum babyshower and although it was in Canterbury and Sue lives in Yorkshire they travelled without any breakages by Royal Mail where I believe they were a big hit.

As we weren’t sure at the time whether it was a boy or girl Sue obliged and did half and half.

Well enough of our little party and celebrations here is Sue with some valuable information to help you decide on a wedding cake for your big day.

Sue:

Choosing your wedding cake – some tips from The Yorkshire Cake Fairy
Your wedding cake is a very important part of your day – providing a centrepiece at your reception. Whether it be a single tier cake, a cupcake tower or a full blown cake with 3,4,5 or more tiers it can produce the WOW factor when chosen and created carefully.

Having something that matches your theme and colours is very important to most brides. Here are a few tips that might help you when choosing your cake.

Traditional cake or cupcakes?
Many brides opt to have a cupcake tower in place of the traditional style wedding cake and this really is personal choice. A small cake can be added to the top of a tower and decorated to match the cupcakes so that there is still a cake to cut in the traditional way at your wedding reception. Cupcakes can be as plain or as intricate as you wish, ranging from simple swirls to mini masterpieces, and cases come in hundreds of different colours to match your theme.
As well as throwing a modern slant on the cake, having cupcakes can also double up as the dessert at your reception, helping your budget go a little further.

Fruit cake or sponge cake?
Most brides seem to be moving away from fruit cake and opting for a plain or flavoured sponge cake such as lemon, chocolate, raspberry, red velvet, orange, chocolate orange or indeed, a different flavour for each tier. This can be done very easily and is again, personal choice. If you are looking to have one of the tiers in fruit cake, this will need to be the bottom tier because this cake is much denser than a sponge cake.

Cakes can be stacked or displayed on a stand.

What are the advantages of a dummy cake?
A dummy cake is exactly as it suggests – a ‘pretend’ cake, decorated to the design you want and looking no different to a ‘real’ cake. Guests are none the wiser as the cake is decorated with real icing and looks exactly like a normal cake. When brides go for this option, it is generally because they want the cake to be intact for when their evening guests arrive.
Usually ‘cutting cakes’ are selected along with the dummy – these are cakes in your chosen flavours with plain icing and are cut up and handed out at the reception or boxed for the guests to take home. Who said you couldn’t ‘have your cake and eat it’??!!
Here are a couple of examples of dummy cakes.

How will I know what size cake to order?
The following is a guide to number of portions from each size and shape cake. This will give you an idea of minimum size you will need, remembering that there will probably be people not attending the wedding that you may want to give a piece of cake to afterwards

How do I choose a designer?

Good designers will ask you to come for a consultation where they will gather information about themes, colours and the look you want to achieve for your cake. You may have pictures you have seen of cakes you like and a good designer can use these as a base to begin working on the design you are looking for. They will also offer a ‘tasting’ if you want one or are unsure of the flavour of cake you would like.

When should I book my wedding cake?
When you have decided which cake designer you wish to use, reserve your wedding date as early as possible. All designers have limited resource and can only therefore take a given number of weddings on the same date, so booking early will avoid disappointment. Don’t worry if you haven’t decided exactly what you want, reserve the date and arrange a consultation nearer the time.

Thanks Sue, I’m sure that’s all going to be very useful to any bride.

So to continue with advice on how to choose the best in the business, this week I’m going to hand you straight over to Courtenay Hitchcock Wedding Photographer from Dorset with some great advice on choosing the right person to capture your special day.

Courtenay…

It’s easy to pick out the really bad Wedding Photographers, but differentiating the averagely good from the really good can sometimes be harder at first glance, There is, though a lot of difference between someone who can take some great shots, and an experienced professional who can deliver a beautiful wedding. The trick of course, is to spot one from the other…

So while you search, instead of being wowed by pretty websites try considering separating up the parts and marking them on four criteria:

The Style – The Person – The Experience – The Product

The Style

Start by looking at websites. What kind of photography makes you say “THAT’S what I want”!

Look closely – are the beautifully posed images you’re looking at from real weddings? How much of your wedding day will the photographer use to create them? Do you prefer a relaxed style where very few people know the camera is there?
Above all else, make sure the images make you feel something.

The person

Weddings are demanding and stressful and Hard Work. The only way to do it successfully is to be truly passionate about what you are doing. It takes a special kind of person to photograph 40+ weddings a year, and remain creative and excited about their job; to capture the most intimate of glances and organise 150 people while keeping everyone laughing; there’s Only One Chance to get it right.

Professional photographers take their business seriously – this is no ‘hobby money’ for them. They charge a fee based fairly on their overheads, experience and expertise.

The Experience

Quite simply, it takes experience to understand and anticipate the Wedding Day. But, it also takes experience to understand and anticipate the needs of the couple before and after the day too – good old-fashioned Service.

Employ a novice building their portfolio, or a part-timer who has a ‘real-life- job with other commitments, by all means – but make sure you do so knowingly, and pay accordingly.

A good Wedding Photographer will have attended potentially 100′s of weddings, and is something of a wedding expert be default – and will gladly share the vast amount of ‘insider’ knowledge they have gleaned along the way. That alone can be worth a fortune.

They understand the investment they need to make in each wedding; turning up an hour before the ceremony with your order of service clutched in their hand and just following you around from there doesn’t really cut it.

The Product

What you ‘get’ should actually be your last decision criteria. If the first three aren’t right, no amount of goodies in section four will make your wedding photography better.

Ultimately, the photography itself has to be at the heart of your decision. You have ONE CHANCE to get the images to put into your Wedding Album that will be looked at for generations to come. Get those images right, and all will be well. Get them wrong, and no amount of photo shopping and Special effects, nor parent albums, DVD’s Guest books and Personalised calendars will correct them for you.

Every good photographer knows this and won’t try to woo you with ‘extras’. If the photography is great, the album can wait a year.

Think about these points as you interview your photographers and you should be well on the way to choosing the right Wedding Photographer for you….

Thanks Courtenay, You’ve given some clear sound advice there and I’m sure it will be helpful.

I’m trying on the blog to bring help and advice to you, from the experts I know, on each aspect of planning your Wedding. My ‘Wedding Plan Guide’ which if you haven’t already found it, is listed on my ‘Bespoke Service’ page. It’s a tick list you can print off to help you get organised, right up to the BIG day.

The excitement of your Engagement can soon fade a little when you realise what now lies ahead. The discussions you’ll need to have together regarding your available budget, the type of wedding you would both like, the season, the ceremony, the venue, can all be a little daunting and you won’t always agree. Here is where a Wedding planner can be invaluable.

You’ll need to consider your guests needs too. The number of guests you would like to invite, will effect your choice of a suitable venue. The date of the wedding will be very important as holiday times for instance, can be difficult to get everyone together. If you start to look around in good time and prepare to be flexible on the day of the week you will be married, you’ll find this part of your planning much easier.

I have a new ‘Save the date’ card which will help both you and your guests plan their calendar.

They are available in White or Ivory. Please contact me if you would like to order them info@celebrationinvitations.co.uk

As there are so many things to think about when booking your wedding venue, I would suggest you do an Internet search to help with this as the list of questions to ask when you’re looking round a venue can be endless but very important. A list to prompt you when you’re there and looking will help keep you on track for what you are actually looking for.

Maybe I should prepare a list and put it into the Bespoke section too. Let me know if you would find that helpful.

I called at a Wedding Venue local to me recently to have a chat with Victoria the Wedding Co-ordinator of The Coniston Hotel, Near Skipton. Here’s what she had to say:

Weddings at The Coniston Hotel and Country Estate

The Coniston Hotel is a wedding venue unlike any other, a venue where friendly, personal service comes naturally. Nestling in 1400 acres of stunning Yorkshire Dales scenery, the estate is one of the most romantic settings imaginable; a perfect place for a perfect wedding.

Yet the location is only part of the story. As we only ever hold one wedding or civil partnership per day, you’re guaranteed to be the focus of our attention, with delicious food, spectacular surroundings and a true Yorkshire welcome waiting for every one of your guests.

Many of our rooms are licensed for wedding ceremonies so you can have your ceremony and reception here with us if you choose.

Have your drinks reception on the terrace at the Hall, the patio at the hotel or in our stunning conservatory. We understand that attention to detail is important and our dedicated wedding coordinator Victoria Yates helps you plan your perfect day prior to the event.

On the day Victoria is here to help with all the details and you are free to enjoy this magical day.

Thanks Vicky,
Having had first hand experience of this first class venue and service for a Christening and my Daughter and Son-in-laws wedding, I can honestly say you just don’t want the day to end. It is the perfect place.

Next time on the blog I will be chatting to a friend who lives at the other end of the country but is going to give some sound advice on how to choose a photographer.

The most romanitc holiday of your life AKA Your Honeymoon!

Your honeymoon should be the most romantic holiday of your life so Eddie Allen author of Around the world in 90 days – A Yorkshireman’s view of the Globe, has put together a selection of destinations to give you inspiration and advice, whether your splashing out or have a tighter budget and wanting to stay closer to home.

Eddie is here to help

For a lot of couples the Honeymoon can end up being the second greatest expense after the venue and its associated costs, so you want to make the right choice. Mind you, every couple has a differing opinion on what to do and where to go. I guess everyone has a different view on what is “perfect”. For me it’s a stilted bungalow hovering over a perfect lagoon in the South Pacific, my wife would tell you it’s a bustling city in South East Asia surrounded by spices, weird food and markets. So what do you do?

Luxury:

Got a healthy budget to play with? Then take a couple of weeks and split things up. It’s lovely to think about lying on a deserted beach for 14 days with your other half but if you’re more active types then consider a multi-centre break. Take the bright white sandy beaches and lagoons of The Maldives, it’s freshly caught seafood, sumptuous spas and scuba diving and you’re talking ultimate luxury. Throw in a week touring the cultural delights of India or Sri Lanka and you’re quickly headed for a top-notch break away.

Not one for humidity, elephants & minibuses? Then The Gulf hides some opulent treats for you. From the modern shopping paradise of Dubai to the classic elegance of Muscat in Oman, there are some gems to discover. Want to go further a field? Check out some islands in Southern Thailand coupled with a crazy few nights experiencing Bangkok or Chang Mai. An amazing safari in South Africa can be long and involve some early morning and late, late nights so compensate with a few days on a Tanzanian beach to recharge those batteries and sort your thousands of photos.

Activity:

Maybe you’re allergic to sitting still and sunbathing or you both prefer a bit more of an energetic break. What could be more romantic than curling up in a chalet on the side of a mountain next to a roaring fire after a hard day on the slopes? Many ski companies offer some great properties away from standard groups and families heading out to the snow. Look out for smaller resorts, as these can be the way forward for a more intimate atmosphere. San Cassiano in the Italian Dolomites, Crans Montana and Arosa in Switzerland are just a few places offering some high quality hotels and chalets, Michelin starred dining and most importantly some excellent skiing.

If the cold snow is putting you off then work on that PADI certificate (Scuba Diving Certificate) and the world is your oyster. If you can stomach the trip spend a week diving the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, the Sinai Province in Egypt is world renowned for divers and the wreck diving off the Caribbean is tremendous too.

Silk Skies Egypt are Egyptian holidays with a combination of relaxation and site seeing giving you time for yourselves.

Hiring your own yacht and sailing around the Med is another option for those looking for a little more excitement – or have it skippered and pretend you’re doing the hard work!

City:

My wife would put shopping as an “activity” but I’m going to club it together with the generic city break. Paris would be top of many people’s lists with its restaurants, attractions and romantic boat rides along the Seine. Looking beyond the obvious though, where could you go? A hop across the pond to the Big Apple gives you a wealth of hotels, restaurants, shows, landmarks, horse-drawn carriages and river cruises. The shopping in New York is fabulous and the non-stop nature of “The city that never sleeps” will entertain for days. If you have a little more time then why not take on a fly-drive across the West coast of the states. Collect a soft-top Cadillac (or Smart car if you’re a little greener) and take in the celebrities of Los Angeles and Hollywood, head into the desert and gamble the nights away in Las Vegas before making your way back to the coast and the historic San Francisco. Closer to home, look at the romantic and historic cities of Rome & Florence or the arty home of Salvador Dali, Barcelona as great city stays.

Pushed for time/smaller budgets:

Time and money should be no barrier to arranging a great little getaway after your wedding. Stay close to home and make the most of the time you have together. Find websites such as www.mrandmrssmith.com for great little hotels dotted all over the world. Specifically designed for couples it’s a great site to find a great deal on hotels and guesthouses where you can chill out and relax after the big day.

If it’s seclusion your after book yourselves a cottage in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales, Welsh Mountains or the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Using a site such as www.cottages4you.co.uk will give you access to masses of properties across the UK and Europe. Finally for those of you feeling a little more adventurous, then you can jump in the car and head across to France for a little camping. Boho chic, Roulottes in Central France, Medieval Tents in Paris or an adult orientated campsite on the Med could be for you. Here’s a further explanation from the guys at http://www.canvas-life.co.uk/

I hope these ideas help and you find an amazing break for you and yours. After the blur of ceremonies, speeches, drinking and dancing there really is no better feeling than getting away from it all to kick back and relax.

In terms of preparation make sure you get booking your stay as soon as possible. The nearer to departure you are the more expensive it’s going to get. If you want to avoid a Chandler and Monica style moment at check-in, ask your travel agent to add **Honeymoon** to the flight booking system. It doesn’t always work but you never know when a business class lounge upgrade might appear on the holy grail of free upgrades! If you don’t ask you don’t get….Just don’t do it at check-in you won’t get very far.

I met up with Helen Davies from Bash recently for a coffee, I asked her a few questions about herself and her thriving business – Bash

Here’s Helen and here’s what she had to say:

How did Bash begin? What is your background?

For the past eight years, I’ve managed internal Communications for a FTSE 250 Financial Services company. It’s a role that involves planning and organising all sorts of events from intimate dinner parties to corporate conferences and Christmas parties for between 50 and 2000 people, so I know how exciting it is to prepare for a special occasion. I also understand how daunting it can be.

The inspiration to create Bash came to me as a result of an animated conversation with a very good friend who was about to embark upon planning her own wedding. Over a cold bottle of white wine, she pointed out all the reasons why she wished she had someone like me to help her. And so it began.

I haven’t looked back. Helping couples to have precisely the wedding they want and making it the happiest day of their lives is so rewarding. For me, standing back, watching you and your guests having a wonderful time gives me the best feeling in the world!

What sort of events do you organise?

We’re passionate about planning fabulous Weddings, Civil Partnerships, parties and celebrations in Yorkshire.

Flueriste Woodbank Nurseries
www.woodbanknurseries.com/weddings

Tell us about your wedding planning services.

Our commitment is to be friendly, flexible and affordable. It runs through everything we do. We don’t just help with the organisation of your wedding day; we relieve all the stress associated with planning it and are there to support you in every area. But we won’t take over or attempt to force our ideas upon you. We simply provide a professional planning service that’s flexible to your needs. Whatever stage of the planning process you’re at, we’ll give you all the advice, suggestions and inspiration you need.

Our services include a Bash Hour (£35) – an hour of a professional and experienced Wedding Planner’s time to use as you wish, venue and supplier sourcing (from £70), bespoke by the hour planning, and on the Day Co-ordination (from £400).

Why should someone consider using a wedding planner?

If we’re working with you from the very beginning, we’ll help you to set a timeline and identify your priorities. As you set your budget, we’ll be there to guide you and will help you to identify the things you absolutely do not want to compromise on.

Weddings are an expensive undertaking, and whilst hiring a Wedding Planner might seem like a superfluous cost, hiring us can actually save you money in the long run. We work with you to make sure you stick to your budget and source the best value for money on every last detail.

We have an enviable network of contacts, giving us access to the best of everything. Our standards are high, really high. We only recommend suppliers who we know and trust and who we believe will care about you. Our valuable connections might even afford you special advantages which are not necessarily available to everyone. In any case, we will always work within your budget and because we care so much about adding value, we pass on any supplier discounts directly to you, so you can always expect that little bit more.

www.ameliaelliott.co.uk

What can a Bride and Groom who book you expect?

Your wedding day is the most important day of your life. You want to be perfect. You envisage every aspect of it running smoothly, seamlessly, without a hitch…but with so many details to take care of, it is hard to imagine how everything will fall into place. If you work full time, are busy juggling other priorities or live remotely from the venue, organising a wedding can be daunting, time consuming and stressful.
As well as helping you to find the best suppliers, we will happily do all the leg work for you. We’ll become your personal assistant and do all the calling, ordering and looking after details that you might not have time to deal with. With so much information to process and things to be confirmed, you can relax in the knowledge that an experienced Wedding Planner is by your side – working for you – taking care of all the e-mails, telephone calls, meetings, co-ordination and on-going management of check lists.
In preparation for your wedding, we will also guide and advise you on etiquette and protocol and we’ll prevent you from making any embarrassing mistakes.
On the day, we’ll take care of all the little details that make a BIG difference. At Bash, we work for YOU and everything we do is in your best interest. It’s our job to ensure you feel relaxed because we want you to enjoy every second of your day.

What packages do you offer?

Rather than offer standard ‘packages’, we simply charge for our time and encourage you to dip in and out of our services as much or as little as you please.

Where are you located and will you travel?

We are based in West Yorkshire and operate throughout Yorkshire and surrounding regions. From lively, vibrant cities to pretty villages, rolling countryside to dramatic coastlines, the North of England has all you could possibly wish for. If you want to escape a big city, we’ve got some of the most stunning open countryside. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for the bright lights and the buzz of a metropolis, you’ll find that here too. There’s so much to choose from!

If you’re looking for the perfect venue, we’ve got stately homes, boutique hotels, luxury spas and cosy, traditional country inns, oozing with character and bags of charm. Coupled with this, we produce great local food and can cater for all tastes – ranging from fabulous fish and chips to Michelin-starred menus.

At Bash, we’ve already done the leg work for you. We’ve travelled the length and breadth of the region in search of some of the best venues and suppliers to inspire you with fresh and interesting ideas.

What sets Bash apart from other wedding and events planners?

We believe in defending a couple’s right to have precisely the wedding day they want to have and as such, challenge those who believe the only way a Wedding Planner can add value is by taking over every aspect. We won’t force our ideas upon you, nor do we expect you to hand over the entire planning process. Instead, we encourage you to enjoy the fun parts of it, whilst taking advantage of a flexible range of planning services that you can dip in and out of as much or as little as you please.

On the blog today is Jackie, an expert in Wedding planning abroad, so I’m handing straight over to her to tell you all about Weddings in Tuscany ….. Over to you Jackie.

Hi I’m Jackie and I own and run Marry Me in Tuscany a bespoke wedding planning company in one of the most beautiful regions of Italy, Tuscany! Tuscany is the size of Wales so I have a fairly large area to cover but when I set the company up I decided that it was better to concentrate on an area I knew well rather than try and cover the whole of Italy, a sensible idea as it turned out as I can pass on my local knowledge and excellent proven contacts to my lovely couples without having to pass on expensive travel costs to them and driving around Italy like mad thing!

http://www.weddingphotopitti.com/

Tuscany is a very diverse region of Italy it has everything, sea, mountains, fabulous countryside and an infinite supply of beautiful places where you can hold your wedding reception from castles, villas, beaches, Agriturismo (farm holiday) & private villas. With quaint little churches and chapels in hilltop towns for religious ceremonies with breath taking views and for the civil ceremonies amazing town halls with frescoes and spacious piazzas which all provide the perfect backdrop for the wedding photos. Add to that the fabulous food and wine and of course the sunshine you can see why lots of couples are choosing Tuscany as their preferred wedding venue.

http://www.marrymeintuscany.co.uk

My British & Irish clients tend to come one maybe once or twice before the wedding so I get a chance to meet them and form quite a close relationship with them but often especially with American, Australian and Canadian clients I don’t physically get to meet them until they arrive for the wedding, so it’s really important that I build up a relationship with them through emails and phone calls. It’s a big responsibility handing over the planning of your wedding to a complete stranger so I need to be constantly available and prompt in replying to their queries and worries about their wedding, they need to trust me to source excellent suppliers understand their requirements for the style of their wedding for décor and flowers and to be there for them when they are having a little wobble about certain aspects of the wedding or too iron out any language and culture problems with a venue they have selected themselves.

Chianti villa Wedding

Living and working in Tuscany (I live in Siena which is fabulous for civil weddings) means that I’m also on hand to check out potential new venues and to make sure the old ones still make my list of fav places and means that I can easily meet with suppliers when a telephone call just won’t do.

I take all the strain out of the Italian bureaucracy and lead couples gently through the paperwork that they need in order to get married in this wonderful slice of paradise.

I think that I’m one of the luckiest people alive, living in this wonderful country, meeting lots of lovely people and being able to use both my Italian and English to make their dreams come true. No two weddings are ever the same and I just love creating beautiful wedding sites, decorating the tables and making sure that all the bride & groom have to do is turn up and enjoy their time with their guests who have often travelled thousands of miles to share their special day.

Many thanks for that Jackie, you are indeed a very lucky person, doing a fabulous job very well.

Next time on the blog we’re staying with wedding planning but this time it’s in the UK with Helen from
